Bill Owens, American Photographer, Distiller, Genuine Next-Door-Man

I love everything Bill Owens does! Bill is unabashedly funny, whiplash smart, ironic without cruelty and talented to boot.

Moving forward as if propelled by a swirling energy, not a neurotic energy, but an elegant flow above the turbulence, he is the personification of American cool-ness.

Bill is very similar to the shimmer of a salmon's reflection in a rushing stream. Easy to see, hard to catch. It seems as if Owens has reinvented himself every decade, but it is more complex than that. It is a productive, lively re-invention. Bill lives in the moment and tosses the past willingly to the devil--with no regrets. All this is poured into his work.

His seminal Suburbia pinpointed 70s suburb life through a series of blunt black and white photographs. He sojourned into beer brewing before it got popular, and most recently, immersed into the world of distilling.

Wix Lounge San Francisco presents a benefit for Blue Planet Network on Friday, December 7th, 2012 from 7-10pm.

Join photographers Rudi Dundas and Christine Krieg as they talk about their experiences and show their work for Blue Planet Network in rural areas of Kenya, India, Cambodia and Vietnam.  Special guest, Sabore, a traditional Masaii warrior from the Samburu region, will also be attending.

Today nearly one billion people live without access to clean water. BPN's  goal is to increase the impact of safe drinking water programs for people worldwide.

A photography exhibit of the work of Ms. Dundas and Ms. Krieg will be on display during the month of December. All prints will be available for sale.

FULL CIRCLE: BURNING MAN BOOK EVENT AT FORT MASON

The Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) presents an evening with George Post discussing his 21-year adventure with Burning Man, as revealed in his just-released book, Dancing with the Playa Messiah.The event, to be held in the magnificent Southside Theatre at Fort Mason's Building D on November 13th,runs from 7pm to 9pm; social hour starts at 6pm.

Post first met the Burning Man when the 1991 effigy was erected and displayed on a floating barge tied
between the piers at Fort Mason on the Summer Solstice of that year. Following the ceremonial "Raising
of the Man" and the generator-powered illumination of his neon nervous system, a film of the first (1990)
Black Rock Desert "burn" was shown in the Cowell Theatre. Impressed by the photographic possibilities,
Post journeyed to the 1991 event and has continued to attend every year since.

The 216-page, 12x12" hardcover book features nearly 1000 stunning color photographs representing Post's
21 consecutive years of participating in, and documenting, Burning Man. At the event, Post will present
a wide selection of images from the book, discussing the challenges of capturing the camaraderie, pageantry,
 and occasional madness of what has now become an inspiring international phenomenon.

Autographed copies of the book will be available for purchase after the program.
So join us at the Southside Theatre in Fort Mason's Building D on November 13th for a truly one-of-a-kind
look at the story of an event that continues to draw thousands upon thousands to the desert each year in
celebration, ceremony, and spiritual communion.

Unless you have been asleep like Rip van Winkle, you must have noticed all the new cocktails available to the imbiber. All colors of the rainbow, crazy concoctions, ancient liqueurs revived, and more. No one could try every alcohol option unless their liver is cast iron. I have been involved with some local distillers' ADI events at Hangar One in Alameda and at one conference I was fortunate to taste at least 50 different vodkas--one was even made from maple syrup. ADI -- The American Distilling Institute was founded by famous photographer Bill Owens. ADI's mission is to disseminate essential information regarding the art and science of distilling and is the place if you want to learn how to craft artisan whisky, brandy, rum, and more. Personally, I just like the drinking part and will leave the creation of alcohol to the experts!

Years ago my brother in law invented two cocktails at a sailor's bar in Alameda, but he was ahead of his time, Now everyone is hopping on the bar bandwagon competing to create the newest drink. It is really crazy and I am enjoying it. Last year there was not enough organic wormwood, a key ingredient in absinthe, and the distillers were panicking. Closet moonshiners have stills in their backyards and combine secret ingredients--even milk or marshmallows. Why there is such an uptick in alcohol consumption is a topic I won't tackle here, Instead I shall plop down on my red bar stool at the Lemon Tree in Alameda where there are no frills and order a vodka cran on the rocks with a side of extra cranberry juice.

A stand out talent in capturing this liquid world artistically is Erik Niemann. Drink Space Beverage Photography was founded by Niemann, who is an abstract painter with a background in architecture.  ASMP member Lee Foster will talk about what he calls “Entrepreneurial Travel Photo Publishing.” Lee hopes to provide ASMP members with practical information and inspiration on how their photo marketing can flourish in a more entrepreneurial manner. Preview Lee’s thinking on many subjects near and dear to the hearts of ASMP members in his website articles on Entrepreneurial Travel Publishing and The Ebook Publishing Revolution.

For his ASMP talk, Lee will address several questions, such as:

• How viable is the travel photo market among book publishers in the mainstream mega-publisher class?
• How robust is the photo market in the major travel magazines, including their new iPad versions?
• Is this now the time to publish text/photo books “independently” and bypass the boutique royalty book publishers?
• How does the ebook revolution make the publishing of photo books independently more plausible? Lee recently published his Travels in an American Imagination book as an ebook with BookBaby.
• How does Lee “monetize” his travel writing/photo website? What are the paths to revenue for such a website? How can the “functionality” of a website be improved?
• How did Lee arrange the “licensing” of the 200 worldwide travel subjects on his website to Uniglobe? Are there more such mass “licensing” opportunities out there for photography or writing?
• If you publish on other website or enter contests, can the “terms and conditions” you check off inhibit your future opportunities to market your content?
• If your photo copyright is infringed upon, how can you collect money, as Lee has ($10,900 from one client in 2011)?
• Can you make money in travel photo/text apps? What made Lee’s app San Francisco Travel and Photo Guide a best seller in the Apple iTunes App Store?
• Can you sell travel photos directly from a site such as Lee’s http://stockphotos.fostertravel.com?
• How important is agency selling of travel photos in the modern scene? Lee works with Alamy and Lonely Planet Images.
• Should you begin putting some of your attention into videos, as Lee has in his recent Hokulea video?

Lee Foster is an award-winning travel writer/photographer, winner of eight Lowell Thomas Awards, the highest prize in travel journalism. All of Lee’s contemporary work in travel writing/photography can be seen at his website www.fostertravel.com. 

Lee has published 10 books, 3 apps, and 3 ebooks. His work has appeared in all the leading U.S. travel magazines and newspapers, from Travel + Leisure to the New York Times. His partnership with the main worldwide travel book company, Lonely Planet, has presented his photos in more than 225 of their books. Lee’s first “independent” book was his travel literary book (with photos) titled Travels in an American Imagination, which is now out as a print book and an ebook. 

He sees his future as a mix of independent books and books with traditional publishers, plus work in apps, ebooks, website publishing, website licensing, travel magazines, and stock photo sales directly or through agents.

but instead turn left onto Oxford Street, then right at the second light, onto Hearst. 

Come up to the corner of Euclid and Hearst (2nd light)

Parking options: Street parking is possible but quite congested on Euclid and side streets leading north from the North Gate. Allow plenty of time to find a parking place park and walk back to McCone Hall. Dependable parking for the public is available for a fee after 5 pm in the Lower Hearst Parking Structure, at Scenic and Hearst. Enter at Level II on Scenic, off Hearst. Cost is $3 for three hours. Bring dollars because the automatic payment machine does not take credit cards.
