Through the practice of meditation we touch into a deeper truth that gets lost in the busyness of our everyday lives. On this day we will use mindfulness of the Three Characteristics of Existence to deepen our understanding of the potential that lays hidden in this ever changing world.

Ayya Anandabodhi first encountered the Buddha's teachings in her early teens, igniting a deep interest in the Buddha's Path of Awakening. She has lived and trained as a nun the Forest Tradition since 1992, mostly in Ajahn Chah monasteries in England. In 2009 she moved to the US to help establish Aloka Vihara, a training monastery for women.

Her practice and teaching are guided by early Buddhist scriptures and through nature's pure and immediate Dharma. In 2011 she took full Bhikkhuni Ordination, joining the growing number of women who are reclaiming this path in the Theravada tradition. She currently resides at Aloka Vihara, near Placerville, CA.

Sudhu Tewari and Carly Hoopes sculpture and photographs

ROAD SCORES is a project born from the love of collecting treasures found on the side of the road (and abandoned buildings, railroad tracks, freeway underpasses, etc.)

Inspired by the burnt out wreck of an RV found in the Trinity mountains, Tewari decided to create a series of sculptures from objects found in the wreckage after spending several hours watching Hoopes find interesting shots of the untouched remains.

Carly Hoopes is a Bay Area photographer who documents “naturally” occurring compositions as she finds them (without rearranging ANYTHING). You may find her gathering bits of visual treasure on the side of the road, near railroad tracks, freeway underpasses, alleyways, dumpsters, piles of garbage (to some), or going quietly into abandoned structures.

The subject matter of Hoopes’ work is often ephemeral. She composes her photographs in camera from the momentary arrangement of weathered waste, burnt remains, abandoned structures and objects with an awareness that anything and everything could be altered dramatically by the kick of a foot, steady wind, curious hand or work of a demolition crew. While not for everyone, Hoopes has a unique perspective on rust, detritus, and neglected place and matter.

Hoopes’ photographs are honest (sometimes uncomfortably direct) expressions of her empathy for and questions regarding life, death, truths, and the inaccessible horizon as nothing is clearly seen and always in flux.  cargocollective.com/carlyhoopes

Sudhu Tewari has been called a professional bricoleur, junkyard maven and young audio-gadgeteer. Sudhu builds electronic audio devices, electro-acoustic musical instruments, kinetic sculpture, interactive installations, wearable sound art, mechanical televisions, physical models of astrophysical phenomena, lamps, objet d’ art, and sound sculpture.

Highly educated at Mills College in electronic music, Tewari has been seen performing improvised music on the east and west coasts of the US, Europe, and Japan. In 2006 Sudhu was selected to be the Artist in Residence program at the Recology in San Francisco. Since then, Tewari's visual and interactive art has been exhibited at many galleries and museums in the Bay Area and a few in Europe.

Tewari is currently a PhD candidate at UC Santa Cruz in the Cultural Musicology program. Sudhu also teaches youth and adult classes at the Crucible in Oakland and has recently been working with young adults to create interactive, kinetic, and musical public art works.  sudhutewari.comhttp://www.thefloatcenter.com/index.html

Meditation Daylong Getting More Skillful with Vedana with Bhikkhuni Sobhana Feb 6 at Alameda Sangha

Meditation Daylong
Getting More Skillful with Vedana with Bhikkhuni Sobhana
Saturday February 6, 2016, 9:30 am - 5 pm
United Methodist Church, 2311 Buena Vista,
Alameda, CA 94501

Feeling - Vedana in the Pali language of early Buddhism - is the subtle first point where any experience becomes accessible to the conscious mind. We learn from the Buddha’s teaching to see feeling as the trigger for craving, and also the easiest point where we can interrupt the cycle of craving, clinging and suffering. But how to get free from this cycle without an unhealthy detachment from our inner life?

In this daylong retreat we will aim to more fully know and experience feelings. This retreat led by Ayya  Sobhana, continues her investigation of fundamental Dhamma in the light of modern neuroscience and new thinking about emotion.

There will be periods of sitting and walking meditation, Dhamma reflections, and time for questions and answers.

Lunch: Please bring lunch and, if you wish, food to offer the monastics. As in the time of the Buddha, Theravada monks and nuns do not grow or buy food and are completely dependent on donations of the daily meal. The monastics eat one main meal a day in late morning and monastic regulations require that they finish by midday. Offering prepared food to the monastics during the daylong provides an opportunity to participate in the tradition

Ayya Sobhana is the Prioress of Aranya Bodhi, a new community for monastic women located on the Sonoma Coast of California. Together with Ayya Tathaaloka Theri, Ayya Sobhana has been deeply involved in the recent restoration of Bhikkhuni full ordination in the Theravada tradition. Please read more about her sangha here and about her background here.

January Art Show at Orland Art Center "New Life for a New Year"

January Art Show
 Orland Art Center

January 8th through January 30th, 2016
"New Life for a New Year"

A warm hearted show that begins the new year with artistic renditions of new life! Livening up the gallery walls will be puppies, foals, calves, chicks, kittens, lambs and other animal babies to delight our eyes.

This exhibit features six talented artists who also happen to have a strong affection for the animals in their lives. They use their artistic skill to capture that unique blend of vulnerability and timeless beauty that all babies have. They meet the challenge of creating art that celebrates new life in a way that others can relate to.

Each artist has a favorite medium and that is clearly reflected in this exhibit. After trying several different techniques, Carol Avellino found her true artistic voice speaks the clearest when she's using pastels. The camera clearly calls to Sharon Barker as her way of telling visual stories and her keen sense of composition never fails her. Pastels provide Cheryl Caldwell a perfect vehicle for her art, but she also knows when acrylics are a better fit for what she's trying to convey about the animals she loves. Artistic drama is Jo Danehy's strength and whether her powerful prints are on canvas or metal, she uses her photographer's eye to fully explore it. Delicacy and deliberation are apparent in Lorine Lauck's approach to her subjects, and with economy of line and shape, she tells a sensitive story. Bruce Perkin never stops experimenting with different photographic techniques and his photos reflect the amazing artistic results of those explorations.

Animals are favorite subjects of many artists, but it takes special skill to capture their essence artistically. And to portray them in their first few days of life is even more difficult. This exhibit proves it can be done with beauty, humor, and grace!
