This Sunday Alameda Sangha will be in Room A Alameda Hospital 2nd Floor - Obstacles to a Life Fully Lived Part 2

This Sunday Alameda Sangha will be in Room A
Alameda Hospital 2nd Floor -
Obstacles to a Life Fully Lived Part 2

Alameda Hospital
2070 Clinton Ave, Alameda, CA 94501

Dear Ones,
Come and explore further and deeper, the hindrances or those 5 which cover over our inner nature of goodness, kindness and generosity by cultivating a more intimate understanding and relationship with them rather than turning away or continuing to remain on automatic pilot. Ajahn Sumedho says to adopt an "affectionate curiosity" towards them.
Those who would like to delve deeper, must bring a journal. We will review the 5 hindrances from last Sunday, learn how to practice, reflect and explore them in a general way, and then more specifically, spend some time with each hindrance so that in selecting which of them tends to predominate for any of us in our daily lives and on the cushion, can observe in  the next week or so by noting in the journal any patterns, triggers and habits of reactivity that are specific to our own conditioning.

Also, please save the date for the June 27th Climate change daylong taught by the Aloka Vihara nuns at the church! Tell your friends.

Do not forget to download the chanting on your phones or tablets to end the evening as always, http://saranaloka.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/chanting-book-33.pdf
There will be ASL class offered by Judi and Aldon at the hospital this Sunday at 6 pm
 in Room A.

The Alameda Sangha is a place to practice and discuss
mindfulness meditation and Buddhist teachings. Founded
in 2008, today we are led by three teachers of the Theravada
tradition, Pauletta M. Chanco, Rebecca Dixon, and Deb Kerr.

We meet Sunday evenings from 7-9* pm usually at the
Buena Vista United Methodist Church,
2311 Buena Vista Ave. in Alameda, CA.
Everyone is welcome.

There is no charge or fee for attending.  According to the ancient
tradition of Theravadan Buddhism, we practice dana, the mindful
generosity that opens the heart.  We provide a donations basket
so those who attend can practice dana in turn and keep the sangha
going so that others can also attend freely.

A Storyteller with a Brush
As an oil painter I am interested in documenting and sharing a moment in time of that space between mankind and nature. I travel extensively looking for that ray of breaking light, a weather beaten factory, an old dairy farm, a vibrant street scene or a dramatic coastal sunset. I am primarily a plein air painter where I attempt to capture the spirit of the place in a loose painterly fashion rather than a photo realistic replica. I enjoy bright vibrant colors and thick paint application where one can see the brush strokes and feel the energy of what caught my eye to begin with.

I am a story teller with a brush.

The Eightfold Path-Alameda Sangha

Dear Friends,

As we progress through life, we encounter all sorts of events that effect us in all sorts of way.  The Eightfold Path leads us confidently on through it all, no matter how we may suffer in response to events.  Beyond both fortune and the emotion it causes is the open awareness that holds it all, the realm of the dharma.
Sunday night from 7 to 8:30, we'll talk about how the Path can guide us to this awareness each moment, whatever that moment holds.  I hope you and your friends will be there.
Warmly,
Rebecca

About Lynne Pillus
http://www.mechanicalquilt.com/about/

Lynne Pillus lives in Oroville, California, a small town about 70 miles north of Sacramento.  Oroville is in the middle of farming country, which accounts for her fascination with farm machinery.  Many small family farms are disappearing, leaving us with rusting equipment by the sides of fallow fields.  This is her attempt to memorialize that part of our heritage.
Lynne's first attempt at quilting was in the '70's, the days of harvest gold, avocado green and orange polyester.  She started with an ankle length patchwork skirt built on a muslin foundation with inserts of brown corduroy.  That's when she discovered that quilts were generally made for warmth.  That skirt was too warm to wear, and too heavy to sleep under.

She tried again in the early '80's with a maple leaf pattern, three colors of calico and a whole lot of muslin.  There were several cereal boxes involved also, with template sized holes missing.  Forty-five hand-pieced blocks later, and 44 plain muslin alternate blocks, she had a quilt large enough to carpet a room.

Time to take some classes.

Lynne has taken many classes since then, and enjoyed many retreats, and had been making traditional quilts for about 25 years.  During this time she tried many new techniques, unusual fabrics and interesting combinations, all in a search to find her own voice.

During a farm tour she spotted an interesting looking harvesting machine, took a photo and wondered if she could reproduce that feeling of depth and motion in fabric.  That was the start of The Mechnical Quilt.

About Judith Frost
Judith's plein air paintings capture the sparking light and the beautiful atmosphere of northern California. These plein air paintings compliment her studio paintings. In 2012,  after several years of painting in watercolor she began painting in oils and discovered the
joy of plein air painting. "Viewing the dramatic light of California's majestic mountains and grand seashores makes me feel exhilarated \to be alive and free, painting where I love to paint!"

Writer and Author Rae Turnbull discusses the recent opening for Keith Christie at The Orland Art Gallery

Rae Turnbull noted artist and author, discusses her visit to .and involvement with, the recent opening for artist Keith Christie at The Orland Art Gallery on April 3rd 2015:

"The reception for Keith Christie's exhibit was a great success! The Gallery was filled with people from the time the Gallery opened at three until the doors closed at 7. The West did indeed come alive in the brilliant paintings on the walls and 13 pedestals perfectly showcased the finely detailed bronzes.

Enjoying it all was the artist Christie himself, now in his eightieth year, wearing his signature western hat, and visiting with admirers. His recent stroke made the evening tiring for him, but as he left, he thanked the Gallery Director for doing such splendid justice to his work. Her reply: It was an honor!
